There was a girl

T'was a girl I used to love

And she brought me up above

Did more than all the rest

And helped me be the best

Her smile always bright

Her kindness was so right

She cried tears for me

When I joined the family

I thought, Could she be the one?

A better girl? There was none!

Admiring from close and afar

She was my guiding star

It was time to move ahead

Down separate paths we were led

We were meant to keep in touch

But I got selfish & didn’t try much

Weeks to months, then finally years

We cracked on with our careers

Still on my mind everyday

Even though I kept her at bay

A decade on, and re-acquainted

I was shocked, I nearly fainted

The girl whose home was in my heart

Seemed to have made a fresh start

Looked and seemed to be the same

Still responded to her old name

No longer innocent and pure

A different girl, of that I’m sure

The guiding star was now gone

Trust me, this is not a con

There was an imposter in her stead

But still in my heart is the one who’s dead
